International Women's Day 2010

The International Women's Day celebrated all over the World on 8th March as a universal day for celebrating womanhood. This event is said to have originated in the year 1908 when women garment makers in New York demonstrated to demand better working conditions. This Day was created to inspire women throughout the world to work towards equality and liberation in the true sense.

Today’s Woman portrays several roles in her life. She plays the role of a mother, daughter, wife, sister, grand mother or friend and displays qualities of nurturing, guiding, caring, loving and sacrifice as and when required. She is a fighter and can be extremely patient or extremely courageous and brave depending on the situation. But still, are we truly liberated? Are we considered as equals to men? Are we getting our due? I guess not. But who is to blame for the situation?  The answer lies in us. We are solely responsible for our plight.

Many of us do not fight for our rights
Many of us hide behind self pity and negativity
Many of us do not try to empower ourselves
Many of us and prefer to be shadows to our men
Many of us take abuse and violence and suffer in silence.
Many of us do not use our education or learning to better ourselves.
Many of us do not say a ‘no’ when we have to say a ‘no’
Many of us just complain but do nothing to change the situation

If anyone is treating us as inferior it is because we have given them the reason to treat us that way. However, I do not think women should have special privileges like reservations or other preferential treatment which clearly makes us look and feel inferior to men. Women should be able to inculcate self esteem, say ‘no’ to preferential treatment and succeed in all walks of life be it career or studies by merit and by proving their true worth. Let us realize our self worth and take pride in what we are. On the event of the International Women’s Day let us promise that we would better ourselves so that we can have a better tomorrow.

Wishing Women all over the World a very happy Women’s Day, 2010
